The 10-Micron Limb Darkening of Venus

چکیده
In June 1964, several diametric profiles of the 8to 14-/z flux from Venus were obtained with the 200-inch Hale telescope operated in the east-arm Cassegrainian mode. These data were recorded with a photometer system described previously [Westphal et al., 1963] as part of a surveillance program [Westphal et al., 1965]. Venus was near inferior conjunction and 52.2 sec of arc in apparent diameter, close to the maximum angular size accessible with the 200inch telescope. Monitor photographs taken during the recording of the data were used to check the exact positioning of the scans on the apparent disk. These photographs also allow an estimate of the seeing disk in the visible to be made and, by a technique to be described below, an estimate of the instrumental spatial response function. An estimate of the true flux distribution along the profile was made by

The black-drop effect explained
The black-drop effect bedeviled attempts to determine the Astronomical Unit from the time of the transit of Venus of 1761, until dynamical determinations of the AU obviated the need for transit measurements. By studying the 1999 transit of Mercury, using observations taken from space with NASA’s Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE), we have fully explained Mercury’s black-drop effect,...
متن کاملVenus: new microwave measurements show no atmospheric water vapor.
Two sets of passive radio observations of Venus-measurements of the spectrum of the disk temperature near the 1-centimeter wavelength, and interferometric measurements of the planetary limb darkening at the 1.35-centimeter water vapor resonance-show no evidence of water vapor in the lower atmosphere of Venus. The upper limit of 2 x 10(-3) for the mixing ratio of water vapor is substantially les...
متن کاملTransits and secondary eclipses of HD 189733 with Spitzer
We present limits on transit timing variations and secondary eclipse depth variations at 8 microns with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC camera. Due to the weak limb darkening in the infrared and uninterrupted observing, Spitzer provides the highest accuracy transit times for this bright system, in principle providing sensitivity to secondary planets of Mars mass in resonant orbits. Finally, th...
متن کاملTransit of Venus described using three-dimensional solar atmosphere STAGGER-grid simulations
Context. An important benchmark for current observational techniques and theoretical modeling of exoplanet atmospheres is the transit of Venus (ToV). Stellar activity and, in particular, convection-related surface structures, potentially cause fluctuations that can affect the transit light curves. Surface convection simulations can help interpreting the ToV as well as other transits outside our...
متن کاملInfrared Photometric Mapping of Venus through the 8- to 14-Micron Atmospheric Window1
The 200-inch Hale telescope has been used to obtain high-resolution maps, on four mornings juxtaposed about the Mariner 2 encounter , of the brightness temperature of Venus in the 8to 14-micron wavelength interval. The resolution was about 1/30 of the disk of Venus. The signal-to-noise ratio was in excess of 100. The maps reveal (1) a general limb darkening, (2) a bilateral symmetry about the p...
